Scenario: The Four-Dimension Battlefield for Submarines

Realistic T&E and exercises for the sub-surface community

As many navies are facing increased demands in terms of deployment- and combat-readiness, the operational tempo is increasing – and with it, the need for advanced test and evaluation (T&E) scenarios.

Several new submarine programs or mid-life upgrades are in progress and new or modified weapon and sensor systems are also in the pipeline. These factors are translating into demands for more complex and more realistic T&E and training and exercise scenarios for the sub-surface warfare domain.

The Four-Dimension Battlefield: Submariner version

FMV Naval Test Ranges’ Four-Dimension Battlefield, located at our Härnösand Naval Range, enables advanced capability T&E for complete submarines or major sub-surface warfare weapon systems such as torpedoes and missiles. Through the usage of remote-controlled target drones both in the air and on or below the surface, a dynamic test and training environment with surprise factors can be created.

By using drones, highly in-demand assets can be released for frontline duties, instead of acting as the red side. This symmetric battlespace, originally developed for surface warships, has now been adapted to enable scenarios where a submarine is the key player.

Complex T&E and realistic training

There are three main cases for which the Four-Dimension Battlefield provides an ideal solution.

  1. In a training and exercise scenario, the submarine and crew can be exposed to a realistic scenario with threats in four dimensions and a surprise factor. This allows training of the complete sensor to weapon release chain.
  2. If a newly developed weapon system has been installed, advanced T&E scenarios can be created to test battle management, sensor and weapon system integration.
  3. If the target submarine is not available or the weapon system is in such early stage of development that an installation in an operational submarine would be complicated, FMV Naval Test Centre are working on making Ægir – our unique submersible system-integration laboratory – available for use as a test platform.

Ægir is planned to be used for advanced concept demonstrations, verification & validation and T&E of submarine systems, sub-systems and weapons. Ægir is expected to be able to host weapon system trials with vertical- and torpedo tube-launched missile systems, heavy and light torpedoes as well as countermeasures.
