Case: Battalion Training

The mission: Training of a 600-strong battalion in action

When our defence force customer needed to undertake large-scale training of their artillery forces together with mortar units – including close air support – they needed a large-scale solution.

They were looking for an expansive, isolated site with facilities and test systems suitable for a 600-strong battalion and a facility that could support smooth deployment as well as host the whole battalion together with their vehicles and equipment.

The solution: Älvdalen Firing Range

FMV Test and Evaluation (T&E) provided access to the Älvdalen Firing Range – an ideal site well-equipped for long-distance artillery firing and testing, large-scale manoeuvres and with restricted airspace for simulated close air support.

The customer was deployed at Älvdalen Firing Range for the duration of the two-week exercise. During the exercise, FMV T&E – with support from the Swedish Armed Forces – provided safety officers, targets, exercise coordination and logistic support. We covered all the preparations necessary to make such a large-scale training scenario possible, supporting them throughout the deployment, training and redeployment.

The result: Well-trained units ready for operation

The unique capabilities of the Älvdalen Firing Range, combined with the knowledge and technical experience of FMV T&E, enabled fire support training in large-scale, cross-domain scenarios – with units both in the air and on the ground. This offered unique practical training opportunities, ensuring the units were well prepared for the real-world situations they could face in the field.
